What is a WHOIS lookup?
A WHOIS lookup is the familiar name for checking domain registration information. DNSReach uses the Registration Data Access Protocol, or RDAP, because it is the modern structured replacement for legacy WHOIS. RDAP uses HTTPS, supports internationalized names and directs each lookup to the service responsible for that domain extension.
What registration information is available?
The authoritative registry or registrar may provide registration, update and expiration dates, domain status codes, nameservers, DNSSEC state and registrar information. The exact fields vary by domain extension and provider. Personal contact details are frequently redacted because of privacy requirements or registration policy.
Support for new domain extensions
DNSReach discovers RDAP services through IANA’s official bootstrap directory rather than relying on a fixed list. That allows operational new generic top-level domains to become discoverable when their registry publishes an RDAP service. Country-code extensions operate under their own policies, so coverage and returned fields can vary.
Registration data and DNS are different
RDAP describes the registration maintained by a registry or registrar. DNS records describe how the domain currently routes web, email and other traffic. Registered nameservers in RDAP can be compared with an NS record lookup, but the two sources serve different purposes and can temporarily differ during a nameserver change.
COMMON QUESTIONS
WHOIS and RDAP FAQ
Is RDAP the same as WHOIS?
RDAP provides domain registration data like WHOIS but uses HTTPS and structured responses. It is the modern replacement for legacy WHOIS services for generic top-level domains.
Why is domain owner information missing?
Registration data may be redacted because of privacy law, registry policy or a privacy service. DNSReach displays only information returned publicly by the authoritative RDAP service.
Does a missing RDAP record mean a domain is available?
No. A missing registration response is not a guarantee that a domain can be registered. Availability must be confirmed with an accredited registrar.
